Of Good Report

A hand-inscribed parchment scroll decorated with an olive branch and oak leaves in gold leaf conveyed a unique Thanksgiving message to The Christian Science Board of Directors from the nine branches of The Mother Church in France. This beautiful token of gratitude was inspired by the recent publication of a French translation of the Christian Science Hymnal. For approximately fifteen years the Christian Scientists of France used a small booklet containing—aside from the seven hymns by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy—the words of only fifty hymns. No music accompanied the words, and it was not always easy to fit them to the tunes used. The steady growth of Christian Science in France, as evidenced by the recognition of three new societies and the springing up of numerous informal groups since the war, emphasized the need for a Christian Science Hymnal in French, and it is natural that the publication of one should bring much rejoicing.

The scroll, which is signed by the chairmen of the nine churches and societies, bears this message:

"The churches and societies of Christ, Scientist, situated in the Centre, North, South, East, and West of France, unite in sending you a joint message of loving gratitude and deep appreciation of the beautiful French translation of the Christian Science Hymnal just compiled. Their gratitude goes out also to all those who have participated in this stupendous work.
