CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SOLVES EVERY PROBLEM

Christian Science teaches that healing results are experienced as individual thought is improved. How is this improvement of thought brought about? Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 162), "The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind." This change of base is the forsaking of the belief of life in matter for the understanding of Life as Spirit, God.

The material base which fetters human thought to limited and inharmonious conditions is fear, sin, disease, and death; whereas the base of spiritual understanding inspires thought and brings into human experience only that which is harmonious, good, and pure. Spiritual understanding is gained as thought is united with God, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love. Christian Science proclaims the one remedy for all discord, sin, disease, and death to be God, man's saving Principle, and Christ, the spiritual idea of God.

When confronted with problems which seem difficult to overcome, we should turn to God with complete confidence and stand firmly on the side of divine Love. By holding thought to the spiritual base we become conscious of God's laws, which we may prove to be eternally operating to overcome suppositional power which claims to threaten our God-given freedom. Even though no evidence of a change is visible humanly, as we hold thought steadfastly to God, good, anything unlike Him which is latent in human consciousness is being uncovered and consequently will be destroyed. The good thoughts we hold act as an alterative to produce the effect of harmony. Mrs. Eddy tells us (ibid., p. 162): "Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness."
