In 1926, when I was expecting a child, quite a few of my friends doubted the successful outcome of the approaching confinement because of my poor state of health. I was much weakened by heart disease and had little resistance. During this time I read a great deal in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, seeking strength and comfort. I came through the birth comparatively well, but soon it was evident that the added burden of motherhood was too much for me. In our distress my husband and I decided to ask a Christian Science practitioner for help. Thanks to her loving help my health soon began to improve, and in a short time I was able to carry out all of my duties as a wife and mother.

In 1934 our son was healed of pneumonia through Christian Science treatment. A year later he was taken ill with angina, followed by a severe attack of nephritis. Instead of turning to Christian Science, we first called a doctor. Shaking his head gravely, he said that he suspected typhus and recommended moving the child to a hospital. On his advice we consulted another doctor, whose diagnosis was the same. Because the heart action was getting weaker, the child's condition became more critical. Then we got in touch with a Christian Science practitioner as quickly as possible—we lived in the country a long way from her home—and asked for help. She arrived at our home the next day and remained throughout the afternoon, working for the child.

When the practitioner left, the boy asked if he might have some fruit. The doctor had put him on a strict diet and among other things had prohibited fruit. The practitioner told him that he could eat anything without ill effects, because man is a child of God and no food of any kind could harm him. I did not insist on the diet the doctor had prescribed, but gave the boy anything he wanted to eat. The day following the first Christian Science treatment our little son, who had been lying listlessly in bed befor the practitioner's visit, was sitting up quite happy and cheerful, as though he had not been seriously ill. A few days later he rose completely well.
