What Is Important to You?
If every reader of these words were to be asked, "What is the most important thing in life to you?" the answers would be as varied as the individual readers. Christian Science has one answer to this question which is proving satisfying to everyone. The most important thing in anyone's life is that he have a correct concept of God, because his concept of God governs his thinking and acting, whether he is conscious of it or not.
There may be one who thinks he has no concept of God, or at best a very confused concept, which means little to him. There may be one who thinks he does not believe in God, at any rate not as that word is commonly used. He does, however, believe in his own existence, his own consciousness. Something has caused him to be, so there must be cause; and is not cause a good name for God? Whether that cause is matter or Spirit is the important decision to be made. It cannot be a mixture of both, because Spirit and what is called matter are opposites and cannot possibly be mixed any more than light and darkness can be mixed.
To know what God really is then is of infinite importance; in fact, it is the only truly important thing to be known, because in that knowledge is included the knowledge of all that really exists. Christ Jesus said that knowledge of God is eternal life and proved his saying to be true. What a great price is put on wisdom and understanding throughout the Scriptures. We read in Job: "It [wisdom] cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. ... No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearl: for the price of wisdom is above rubies;" and in Proverbs: "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." Here then is that which is the most important of all things to be chosen. Wisdom and understanding can come only with a knowledge of God, the source of all wisdom and understanding. This understanding or knowledge of God includes a knowledge of man, who is the creation or expression of God, one with Him in nature, substance, and activity, incapable of being separated from his divine source.
