The Father's Business

[Of Special Interest to Children]

The day Peter was just twelve, he felt somehow a little more responsible than ever before. He had learned in the Christian Science Sunday School that the kingdom of heaven is "the atmosphere of Spirit, where Soul is supreme" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 590).

When it was bedtime, he was always eager to hear a Bible story. "Peter," his mother began in her quiet voice, "you are as old now as Jesus was when he stayed behind in Jerusalem. You remember that he went up to the yearly feast of the Jews with his mother and Joseph and all their kinfolk. It wasn't until after a whole day's journey of the return trip that his absence was discovered, and it was three days before his parents found him in the temple at Jerusalem. There was the little boy surrounded by learned men, listening to them and asking them questions!"

"And when Joseph and Mary seemed so surprised, and told Jesus they had looked for him 'sorrowing,' that is when he said, 'Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?'" Peter interrupted with enthusiasm. "We've talked about that in Sunday School. We learned that we, too, can be about our Father's business by being helpful and kind and always ready to know the truth about anybody who needs it, can't we, Mother?"
