The Immortality of the Word

He who dated the Christian era is often called the master Christian. His recorded ministry was of a short duration, only three years, but for many years Jesus had been preparing himself for his mission of teaching and healing. How thorough and complete this preparation must have been is best evidenced by the results of that three–year ministry! Although he spoke in a tongue which has since fallen into general disuse, and although he did not have the benefit of advertising mediums, his teachings have encircled the globe, the truth his works demonstrated becoming the "living bread" to all ages. The religion he founded has become an integral part of everyday living.

The Bible records that Jesus said (Matt. 24:35), "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." And they have not passed away, but have come ringing down through the centuries, a constant reminder of the immortality of the Word of God. Jesus knew that only so far as he voiced the Word of God would his words be immortal. The care which Jesus exercised with respect to the words he spoke, is evidenced by the four Gospels. Nowhere in this record of Jesus' ministry do we find Jesus voicing mere human opinion. His words were the words of Truth, the gospel which he preached and lived.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and the author of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," knew that only to the extent that she listened for and expressed God's Word would this textbook live and prove to be immortal. Here, too, we find the same meticulous care to be sure that she voiced only the Word of Truth. She says (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 115), "I should blush to write of 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' as I have, were it of human origin, and were I, apart from God, its author."
