Over thirty years ago my...

Over thirty years ago my mother decided to try Christian Science treatment for her sight. Several years before this she had had an operation for cataracts, which had seemed to help for a while, but she was slowly losing her sight. Oculists told her they could not fit her with glasses better than those she had, and offered no encouragement for recovery at all. She became very much discouraged. Meanwhile my sister had become interested in Science, and recommended that she try it. At the time, my mother was making her home with me, and asked me to take her to a practitioner sixty-five miles away. I did not have much faith that it would do her any good, but felt I should do what she wished. At that time I was a member of a Protestant church and was opposed to what I understood Christian Science to be. I knew little about it but knew a few people who attributed their healing to it.

We met the practitioner and she took up the work. I was asked to read the Lesson-Sermon to my mother every day and to read Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy until I had finished it, reading several chapters a day, which I did. I had been in a very nervous condition due to several ailments, mainly liver and stomach trouble, and was careful about the food I ate. Doctors had prescribed a diet, and of course different kinds of medicine. I was very thin, weak, and irritable, but I did not think that reading Science and Health would help me. In a short time, however, I began to eat more food and sleep better. My husband noticed the change before I did, and one day he said: "You seem to be eating most anything you want, and sleeping well, too. You don't suppose reading that book is helping you, do you?"

I replied I didn't think so, but in a short time I knew it was. I was eating whatever I wanted, and my thinking was greatly changed. "The old man with his deeds" was put off, and "the new man," as the Scriptures tell us (Col. 3:9, 10), was "put on." Irritation over every little thing vanished, and I found myself healed. My mother's eyes improved until she not only could do her own reading from Science and Health, but could read many books of fine print.
