We Must Be Strong

It is important to learn what strength is, for it is vital in demonstrating that immortal Mind is supreme. Christian Science teaches that strength is not inherent in matter, but that it is a quality of divine Mind and is reflected by Mind's idea man. This truth, recognized and kept active in human consciousness, will dispel the carnal belief of weakness.

Strength is synonymous with vigor and power, and is associated with invincibility and security. On page 183 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we read: "Obedience to Truth gives man power and strength. Submission to error superinduces loss of power." The strength which is allied to true purpose, vision, courage, dominion, and fearlessness, and which is the result of obedience to Truth, permits no belief of moral, physical, or mental weakness. It is Truth which equips one with strength to rise above discordant situations and conditions, whether they be in the home, the community, the nation, or the world.

"Meet every adverse circumstance as its master," is the command given by our Leader in Science and Health (p. 419). When confronted, then, with a hostile, opposing circumstance or condition, what are we expected to do? We are to meet and master it. We are not to meet it as false material sense might tempt us to meet it—in fear, in weakness, in agreement with its pretensions, and by conceding to it reality. We are to meet it "as its master." And Christian Scientists should today be meeting and silencing the would-be challenge of mortal mind and its claim to world strife, turmoil, unrest, suspicion, with the healing power of Truth.
