The Practicality of Prayer

Walter Couch Advance, New York, New York

War is not inevitable. Peace is the purpose of God, and peace will be our gift from God when we are willing to receive it. God has made it clear to all what is necessary if we are to have peace: "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"...

If we contemplate the reality and majesty of the Eternal, we shall utter prayers of thanksgiving. ... If we are quiet in body and mind until we feel the presence of the divine Friend, we shall pray for power to be nobler, braver, more loving persons. Such prayer practiced hourly each day of the week, each week of the year, performs the miracle of slowly but surely transforming us into better persons. Therein is the indisputably marvelous power of prayer. About that no one needs to be a skeptic, for all can try it and prove it. But it must be persistent unfailing discipline.
