Inspired Sunday School Teaching
[Excerpt from an address given in a branch church by a Sunday School teacher]
The Christian Science Sunday School teacher has the great privilege of sharing with the children the glorious truths of Christian Science which Mary Baker Eddy in a lifetime of devotion gave to the world. In her great work our Leader was inspired of God, and he who would teach from her inspired textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," must reach his pupils through inspiration. Children are quick to respond to the mental atmosphere of the class. If the teacher feels disturbed or uninspired, the class may be inattentive. But if the teacher comes to the class on Sunday morning inspired and eager to impart the healing truth to the pupils, they in turn will be eager to receive what he has to give.
How do we reach this altitude of spiritual inspiration? The answer is given in one word, love—love for God, for man, and for all the good that expresses God. If we have an understanding love for the great lifework of Jesus and Mrs. Eddy, it will be a joy to acquaint the children with it. If we spiritually understand and love the Bible stories, we shall enter into them enthusiastically with the children. The inspiration which comes from Love is ever present and is expressed abundantly by those who hearts are ready to receive it. Speaking of the "ancient inspired healers," Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 145), "So divinely imbued were they with the spirit of Science, that the lack of the letter could not hinder their work; and that letter, without the spirit, would have made void their practice."
At one time I was given a class of boys about ten years old, three of whom had a reputation for being unmanageable in day school as well as in Sunday School. I well remember that after many tears and much praying I was led to let the textbooks, the Bible and Science and Health, be the teacher of that class. Each day I studied the Lesson thoroughly, praying for inspiration and love. It became a challenge to see if I could take enough enthusiasm for Science into the class on Sunday to outweigh any enthusiasm for misbehavior.
