I wish to express my gratitude...
I wish to express my gratitude for Christian Science; for the Christian Science Rest Rooms for Allied Forces in the British Isles, where I first began its study, and later became a member of The Mother Church; and for the Rest Centers abroad. For the service given by Christian Science Officiating Ministers, Authorized Workers, and volunteer Wartime Workers, who are always at hand to guide us along the right path, I am also very grateful. As I have gone about my daily work in the Army, I have had many instances of God's protective power, and I should like to relate one experience in particular that occurred during my service in Italy.
We had been throwing live grenades from a throwing bay, namely, a cover behind which soldiers take protection whilst throwing. My comrade was about to throw a grenade of the type used against tanks, when it exploded prematurely. The blast knocked me down into one of the corners of the bay. There was a great roaring in my ears so that I could hear very little, my eyes were so filled with dust and other foreign matter that I could hardly see, and I seemed to be numb all over, quite unable to move. My first thought was of "the scientific statement of being," given on page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Mentally I repeated the first sentence, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter." I repeated it a second time more slowly, whereupon I managed to get to my feet and walk out of the bay into the open, where I noticed the body of my comrade. I lay down there quietly to wait for help, and as I was being given first aid I realized the truth that I was under God's loving care.
At the hospital the doctors asked questions which I was able to answer accurately, even to the approximate time of the incident. The X rays showed no broken bones, and there were no internal injuries, though I did have wounds on my left foot and on both legs and hands.
