In 1895 our family was living...
In 1895 our family was living in St. Louis, where Christian Science was as yet very little known. Medicine was used overfreely in our home, and a monthly doctor's bill was on hand as regularly as the grocer's and other household expenses. My father was steeped in medical theories, and on his trips he carried an extra traveling case of remedies.
The mistaken belief that a man had to drink with his customers in order to keep them strongly prevailed in those days. And every period of overindulgence on my father's part was followed by hours of remorse, and of desperate efforts to abstain from alcoholic drinks.
During a business trip to Denver, Colorado, my father became ill with hemorrhages of the liver. After a week he was told by the hotel physician that he could not live until morning, and that it would be well to send for friends in the city, since the family could not be reached in time. My father sent for a friend, who came at once and insisted upon taking him to his home. That night the friend's wife asked my father if he would allow her to give him a Christian Science treatment, adding that she had been healed by Science. My father did not remember having heard of Christian Science, but he gladly consented to treatment.
