The Desirable Third Class

At this time of readjustment in countries which have been at war, the same Christian Scientist may be asked within an hour to treat an ex-service person who feels he has a right to return to his prewar position, and also to treat a civilian who has been replaced by such a one and objects to stepping back, as he puts it. In either case the seeker, if sincere, may take advantage of the opportunity to avail himself more fully of the Christlike qualities of thought which are constantly presented to him as he reads his textbooks, the Bible and "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

On page 450 of the latter one finds three classes of thinkers described. With the first two no onewould wish to identify himself, but of the last it is said: "A third class of thinkers build with solid masonry. They are sincere, generous, noble, and are therefore open to the approach and recognition of Truth." Moreover the description continues, "They do not incline longingly to error, whine over the demands of Truth, nor play the traitor for place and power."

One finds in these quoted words a precise spiritual remedy for certain defined errors of the carnal mind. Herein are set forth three constructive Christlike qualities—sincerity, generosity, and nobility—and three destructive qualities of mortal mind. It may be well to consider the latter first in order that one may eliminate from thought those qualities which lead to insecure masonry. A construction engineer, for example, should test the cement mix which he uses, before, not after, he builds his wall.
