When I was a child, my father was healed of near blindness. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was given to him by a friend who saw his need. When he read the book for the first time, he read far into the night. On laying the book aside to retire he discovered that his glasses were resting on his forehead, where they had been during his reading. His vision was normal.

There were other proofs of God's healing care after that in our family. A baby brother on finding a jar of mustard ointment within reach opened it, and in a few moments was screaming with pain. He had the ointment in his eyes and mouth and had apparently swallowed some of it. Realizing that medical help could not be obtained quickly, since we lived on a farm, my parents, though still somewhat dependent on medicine, called a Christian Science practitioner. In a short time the baby went to sleep, and on awakening showed no signs of any effects of the ointment .

As I grew up I gave little thought to the importance and application of Christian Science until 1938, after I had been married several years. One morning I arose with the mumps. By the end of the week I was taken to the hospital with complications of sleeping sickness and symptoms of spinal meningitis, and the worst was expected.
