God Is Always with Us

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Little Margaret loved her mother very much, and tried to obey her. She had found out that everything came out all right when she was truly obedient. But there was something that bothered Margaret very much—she did not like the darkness, and wanted a light in her room after she had snuggled into bed at night. Margaret was a wee bit ashamed to say so, but she didn't like to see the shadows that seemed to be everywhere. When the moon shone into her room they danced around like goblins that she had read about in a book of fairy tales, and in order not to see them she would hide her face in the pillow. Of course Margaret knew there were no such things as goblins, but nonetheless she did not like the shadows.

Every Sunday, Margaret went to the Christian Science Sunday School. There she learned that God is everywhere, and she knew there was not any place outside of everywhere. She knew, too, that God loved and cared for her, but still after Mother had put out the light, she sometimes became quite afraid, because everything was so black and quiet. Then one night a funny thing happened. She heard a queer little noise, and called loudly for Mother to come and help her. Almost at once a cold nose was resting against her hand, and a small pink tongue was gently licking it. Then she knew that her beloved Rover was the cause of her fear, and she was glad no one had heard her call.

The next morning she decided that she would never again doubt her heavenly Father's care for her. She remembered what her Sunday school teacher had read to the class about Peter's leaving the boat to walk on the water, and of his cry for help when he became afraid. She could almost remember Jesus' words (Matt. 14:31), "O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?" And Margaret, remembering their meaning, said to herself, "I will not be afraid again when I am alone in the dark, for God is always with me." And she kept her promise.
