Fulfilling the Law

A great exponent of divine law tells us (Rom. 13:10), "Love is the fulfilling of the law." Profound as it is comprehensive, the sentence embodies in the one short word "love" a complete content of spiritual law. Virtually law relates only to God's decrees and His supremacy over the one real creation—spiritual man and the cosmos.

The Bible is rich in examples of power, protection, and peace afforded both to individuals and to nations by strict obedience to this all-encompassing law of Love. The Psalmist, with a heart overflowing with gratitude, could sing (Ps. 119:97), "O how love I thy law!" This perfect law is referred to in another Psalm (19:8) as "rejoicing the heart" and "enlightening the eyes." Its eternality is also asserted in the following words (Ps. 111:7,8): "All his commandments are sure. They stand fast for ever and ever."

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, accepts spiritual law as the only one governing the entire realm of reality. She emphatically affirms that from Love, the divine Mind, emanates all law, beneficially and harmoniously controlling God's perfect universe. On page 379 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" she states, "The real jurisdiction of the world is in Mind, controlling every effect and recognizing all causation as vested in divine Mind." She is equally definite on page 229, pointing out, "By universal consent, mortal belief has constituted itself a law to bind mortals to sickness, sin, and death." She adds, "The so-called law of mortal mind, conjectural and speculative, is made void by the law of immortal Mind, and false law should be trampled under foot."
