The demonstrable truth revealed...
The demonstrable truth revealed in Christian Science heals. I know this is true, for it has healed me. Until Christian Science found me, hardly a year passed that I did not spend from several weeks to several months in bed with one illness or another, some of which were nearly fatal. Between illnesses, my almost constant companions were colds, nervous indigestion, and fatigue. In retrospect, it seems that fear was an ever present mental guest—fear of illness germs, drafts, accident, frustration, failure.
My life was to all appearances normal, filled with congenial activity, many friends, vigorous physical play when possible, and interesting avocations. Our home had been a happy one, blessed with much love and optimism, so that illnesses were by no means the result of morbidity. Rather were they the effect of misguided belief in and reliance on materia medica. The error personally experienced, with its accompanying pain and loss, seemed so real that habits of fear and worry became deeply ingrained.
Through school years and later in business this battle with fear continued. Finally, it culminated in an experience in which my modest business failed, all my material resources were swept away, and a continued period of privation and lack of food brought me to "the valley of the shadow of death" (Ps. 23:4).
