The World's Great Need

Christ Jesus knew humanity's need to be a spiritual understanding of God, and with tender compassion he lived and taught the great rule, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Matt. 6:33). The need of the world today is for spiritual ideas, which are found when they are diligently sought above all else. The inspired state of consciousness which seeks spiritual verities, and expresses them, enjoys better health, happiness, and success*.

In these momentous times a Christian Scientist has an opportunity, as well as a duty, to lessen and counteract the so-called forces of fear, greed, and ruthlessness by entertaining a clear concept of the true substance of infinite supply, which is man's rightful heritage as the son of God. Mary Baker Eddy makes this significant statement in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 468): "Substance is that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay. Truth, Life, and Love are substance, as the Scriptures use this word in Hebrews: 'The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.'" Surely one of the world's greatest needs is to know that man is sustained by the riches of infinite Mind. To know is to have, and the admission to oneself that God is All-in-all leads to the conscious realization of the abundance of infinite good as continuous and perpetual, adequately supplying every demand.

Many have learned through the teachings of Christian Science that right thinking and right acting are a sure defense against claims of lack, limitation, or inactivity. For example, a newly married couple found it difficult to live within their income, and mortal mind argued that a certain sum was required for their daily expenditures. One morning their need seemed desperate. Material suggestions of fear, unemployment, and want clouded their vision so that their sense of relationship with God was obscured by thoughts of anxiety and depression.
