Nearly thirty years ago there...

Nearly thirty years ago there was much in the newspapers of an epidemic of infantile paralysis in this state. I had been a graduate nurse, and was in great fear because I had never known of a perfect healing of that disease.

The thing that I greatly feared came upon me. One evening when my husband, who was not at that time a Christian Scientist, was out of town, our infant daughter began to manifest all the dreaded symptoms that I had seen in connection with that disease. I was so full of fear that I could not even bring myself to call a Christian Science practitioner. I cried out from the depths with all my heart to God and many proofs of His loving care came to my thought. One of the greatest causes of my fear was that I had promised my husband that if any disease in our children did not yield quickly to Christian Science treatment. I would consent to have a medical doctor, at least for a diagnosis. In this case, however, I knew only God could heal the child.

When morning was near it came to me clearly and firmly that I could do whatever was right, and trust God's care. Then the angel message of the hymn, "Shepherd, show me how to go." written by our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy (Poems, p. 14), came to me and I sang it in perfect peace, and was not conscious of anything more until I awakened to find the child entirely well, and peacefully sleeping. There were no aftereffects except gratitude and a greater consciousness of God's presence and love.
