Having had the privilege of...
Having had the privilege of being reared in a Christian Science home, where the omnipotence of divine Principle was applied to every evidence of error, I can gratefully testify to the healing and uplifting efficacy of Christian Science.
For healing and protection throughout my early youth I was completely dependent upon a beloved member of my family and the help of practitioners. However, as a young man I discovered the importance of demonstrating this practical truth for myself.
While working as a linotype operator on my father's newspaper, I was placing a new block of cleaned metal into the melting pot from which the type is cast. The block slipped from my fingers and the searing metal splashed up, covering the entire ball and pupil of my right eye. This metal, when it strikes flesh, has a tendency to burn and stick and is difficult to dislodge. At the moment, it seemed the right thing to have a doctor remove the metal, and this was done. All the while, however, I found myself inspired and sustained by the opening words of "the scientific statement of being" as found on page 468 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all."
