Time of plenty, days of prosperity, smooth and unruffled conditions of life, have never been conducive to the promotion of the spirit of gratitude. On the contrary, times of hardship, days of scarcity and suffering, conditions of perplexity and anxiety, have proved to be the most fruitful soil for the growth of that most gracious of all virtues, the spirit of thankfulness.
