"Salute it"!

It was a beautiful sunny afternoon as we walked by a large hotel on the avenue which the government had taken over for a naval barracks. Over the entrances our country's flag was flying, and as the men entered, each one, alter ascending a few steps, stopped, and saluted the flag.

It was an impressive sight. The salutes were not perfunctory, but were, so it seemed, performed with great respect and esteem. As we thought about it it seemed very clear that it was not the flag itself, nor obedience to the order to salute, which inspired that attitude of the men which was impressive. It was more than that. The flag was a symbol of something which meant a great deal to the men. It was a profound idea which was symbolized there, and which brought forth the reverence so evident to the onlooker.

And then the thought came, Would it not be well if, each morning before entering the new day, every one of us would mentally salute the Christ, or divinely right idea? If we would but mentally salute, or recognize, the very presence of the Christ, and of the uninterrupted and continuous nature of its perfect expression, it would be an ideal way to start upon a new day.
