In 1916 I lost a Civil Service...

In 1916 I lost a Civil Service appointment on the evidence of three doctors, each of whom certified that I was suffering from a kidney disease alleged to be incurable. I received medical attention and followed a strict diet for a long period, but experienced no improvement. During the years which followed I was examined about seven times for life insurance, but always had to pay a higher premium because the doctors' reports were unfavorable.

In 1930 I became interested in Christian Science, not with any thought of my own healing but because a relative had received much benefit. An understanding of this Science did not come easily, but as I persevered in the study of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I began to discern the spiritual nature of man, made in the image and likeness of God. I perceived dimly that since man is spiritual he is not bound by material law, but is subject only to spiritual law.

I had no specific treatment for the kidney trouble, but when I had to submit to a further examination for life insurance, some years later, I was found to be completely healed. This experience showed me that the regeneration of the body necessarily follows a regeneration of thought, and illustrates the text, "He sent his word, and healed them."
