Bible Notes
[The Biblical citations given in the Christian Science Quarterly are from the Authorized King James Version. The Bible Notes in these columns can be used, if deemed necessary, to elucidate some of the words or passages contained in the Bible Lessons. The Notes in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon designated to be read in Christian Science churches on April 11, 1943.]
"There is no God like thee ... who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants" (I Kings 8:23)—The term which is here translated "mercy" can also mean "kindness" or "love." Smith renders: "who keepest loving faith with thy servants;" while Moffatt prefers the following: "... who keepest thy compact and showest kindness to thy servants."
"Beware of him" (Ex. 23:21)—The Hebrew verb "shamar" is employed in the Bible in a wide variety of senses, and it may be noted that it is the verb translated "keep" in verse 20, but "beware of" in the present verse. Brown, Driver, and Briggs in their Hebrew Lexicon suggest the rendering "take heed," in verse 21.
"My name is in him" (Ex. 23:21)—Moffatt suggests the alternative rendering: "I am manifest in him;" while the Margin of the sixteenth century Genevan Version has: "I will give him mine authority, and he shall govern you in my name."
