Over a period of eight years I have come to know from firsthand experience what Christian Science can mean to a man tempted to believe in sickness, accidents, disfigurement, and mental stress.

In October, 1935, I was sick and badly frightened. Through the good offices of the Christian Science practitioner who replaced the doctor in the case, I began immediately to experience a gradual but steady improvement. Isaiah declares, "In the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes." At the time, the room where I lay seemed to me to be filled with dragons, but as the presence of God was realized more and more, the illusion disappeared completely. This healing made a tremendous impression on me. With it came release from the smoking habit, which had continued some twenty-five years, and also freedom in other directions.

Since that time, there have been other trials. I believe it is common experience among students that at the start each problem which presents itself appears new and different, and perhaps more acute than others. One is tempted to argue, Christian Science healed me in the other cases, but can it do so here? But as we persist in declarations of Truth, the difficulty, whatever it is, becomes less fearsome. It abandons its locale in the foot, or hand, or whatever part of the body we originally supposed it to be, and becomes less tangible. We inevitably come to the point where we see that the trouble is entirely mental.
