Derby, Derbyshire, England (First Church).—Services of dedication of First Church of Christ. Scientist, Derby, were held on Sunday, July 4, 1943.
It was in 1904 that the first seeds of Christian Science were sown in Derby, when "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was given to a gentleman residing at Alvaston. He studied the book and interested others in its study, and in September, 1907, the little group of people held their first informal Christian Science service in a private house. In June, 1908, a small room was rented and the services were made available to the public.
In 1912. suitable rooms for services and a Reading Room having been found in Friar Gate, application was made to The Christian Science Board of Directors for recognition as an official branch of The Mother Church. This resulted in the establishment of the first official Christian Science organization in Derby, under the name of Christian Science Society, Derby. At this time, too, the holding of testimony meetings was commenced. These were held monthly.
In 1915, weekly testimony meetings were instituted, and at this-time accommodation had again become inadequate. A piece of ground was leased in Friary Street, and the society built a temporary structure suitable for services and provided a Reading Room. In 1917, the first Christian Science lecture was given to the public under the auspices of the society. In 1918, The Christian Science Board of Directors gave official recognition to the society, to be known as First Church of Christ. Scientist, Derby. In 1915 the ground became the property of the church.
The building of the new church commenced in January, 1937. In November, the cornerstone was laid, and the building was completed in July, 1938.—Derbyshire Advertiser.
