The Command to Go Forward

The Biblical story of Moses and the children of Israel is ever a source of inspiration to students of Christian Science. The hopes and disappointments of the Israelites in their struggle to throw off the yoke of Egyptian servitude and to reach the promised land afford many helpful lessons; and the alert student is quick to discern that the account is not only of historical interest but also of practical value to him, for this struggle parallels his own in many ways.

When the children of Israel saw the Egyptians marching after them, they began to reproach Moses for having led them from their homes; and they said it would have been better to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness. Moses made every effort to comfort them, to allay their fears, and to strengthen their faith in God; and when he turned to God for help on that occasion, the Lord said unto him, "Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward."

This command to "go forward" comes to each student of Christian Science, no matter how much or how little he has progressed on his journey from materiality to spirituality. Surely if we see the need of continually going forward, we should not resist this demand, but should constantly pray for clearer vision and be willing and obedient in taking the steps that are unfolded to us.
