In a sermon reported by the Gazette recently a minister is said to have included Christian Science under "religious cults and isms." Will you kindly give me space for a brief reply?

Webster defines the word "science" in part as follows: "Knowledge classified and made available in work, life, or the search for truth." Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, answers the question, "How would you define Christian Science?" in her book "Rudimental Divine Science" (p. 1) as follows: "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." And the question, "What is the Principle of Christian Science?" she answers thus (ibid.): "It is God, the Supreme Being, infinite and immortal Mind, the Soul of man and the universe. It is our Father which is in heaven. It is substance, Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love,—these are the deific Principle."

We agree with the clergyman that "Christian Science promises the way to good health, and that everybody wants that, so Christian Science has interest from the start." We also agree that if the church is to survive it must be useful. It was practical usefulness of the early Christian church which attracted the people's attention. When spiritually understood, there is no mystery in the teaching of our Master and Way-shower.
