"Liberal Christian," writing in a recent issue, misinterprets the teachings of Christian Science.

Christian Scientists do not ignore evil or merely pretend that it does not exist. Evil will never be overcome in that manner. The nature of evil is concisely stated on page 186 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, where she says: "Evil is a negation, because it is the absence of truth. It is nothing, because it is the absence of something. It is unreal, because it presupposes the absence of God, the omnipotent and omnipresent. Every mortal must learn that there is neither power nor reality in evil."

Christian Science teaches that God is the only power and declares His government to be supreme, "as in heaven, so on earth" (Science and Health, p. 17). This fact concerning God, when it is understood, brings healing and redemption to mankind. The fruits of Christian Science, as manifested in the destruction of evil, are the results of the cultivated spiritual understanding of Christian Scientists.
