The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Manchester, Lancashire, England (Second Church).

Lecturer: Miss Lucia C. Coulson; introduced by Frank Fothergill Heywood, who said:—

In these days, when civilization seems in danger of toppling about our ears, when maps are changed overnight, and lies seem to obtain the same currency as truth, the words of Jesus come with peculiar force: "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, through her true discipleship, discerned that Truth is Spirit, and contains no material premises; that the demands of Truth are spiritual; and that, in the words of St. Paul, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." This liberty came to me when I was in bondage to disease, and healed me instantaneously of an acute lung affection. The spiritual sense of Truth was gained, and with it the freedom promised by Jesus. This spiritual sense of Truth brings with it freedom from fear and hate, and gives security from all the destructive elements of material thinking.

Melrose, Massachusetts (First Church).

Lecturer: Miss Florence Middaugh; introduced by Francis W. Potter, who said:—

In the Bible it is recorded that Christ Jesus said to the woman of samaria, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, writes (p. 547) : "The Scriptures are very sacred. Our aim must be to have them understood spiritually, for only by this understanding can truth be gained."

It is through the spiritual understanding of the Bible, as revealed to them in this "key" to the Scriptures, that Christian Scientists are able to practice this healing truth, with "signs following."
