In the spring of 1935, a disease developed in my right...

In the spring of 1935, a disease developed in my right leg. I had not been confined for a day with illness for twenty-nine years, and I expected to heal myself readily. I had proved Christian Science and was aware of its demonstrability. But I did not heal myself, and therefore asked for treatment from a practitioner. The leg grew worse, and my strength was ebbing. And had I not had a demonstrable knowledge of Christian Science I should have been filled with dread, whereas I was calm. One day I made a call at an office downtown, where I became so ill that I doubted if I could manage to get back. I noticed a police officer at the counter, and asked him if he could take me home. He had a patrol car outside and took me home in a few minutes, for which I was very grateful. I had been out each day till then, but I now decided to stay in bed. I was so ill that I felt I was not far from the shadow of death.

After a severe struggle I began to gather strength. The ninth day of my being in bed was a Wednesday, and that afternoon I had a great desire to be at the Wednesday evening testimony meeting. It was a twelve minutes' walk, and there was no conveyance. The meeting was at eight. The mental struggle continued till almost seven-thirty, when I rose, shaved, dressed, and walked to church.

I was out the next day during the morning, afternoon, and evening. On Friday afternoon I was in the center of the city, moving among the busy traffic and making business calls. I was much helped by the Scripture, "They that waitupon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Revelation 12:10 also helped me.
