"I will overturn"

The prophet Ezekiel represented God as saying, "I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him." Human history sustains the claim that right alone is sovereign and permanent. But individuals who would be on the right side must ally themselves with divine Principle, God. They must see clearly that the warfare is not against persons, cliques, or nations, for, as said the intrepid Paul, "we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places;" in a word, against materialism, the generally accepted belief in a power opposed to God, Spirit.

Christian Science teaches, and has enabled its adherents measurably to demonstrate, the unreality and powerlessness of evil, in accordance with Scriptural authority that God, good, alone is real and all-powerful. The Christian Scientist is confident, because he has proved the efficacy of spiritual understanding to overcome erroneous beliefs and conditions, and he is thereby equipped to be of inestimable worth in helping to solve the problems facing the nations.

One of the subtle suggestions that the student needs to guard against is that with such stupendous numbers involved in world problems, such inexplicable angles, such large issues, the efforts of a single worker may be of little moment. Such mesmeric thinking is the enemy's own tool. Let us awake and remind ourselves, even in the face of contrary, material evidence, that good is real and evil is unreal. Has not this been our practice in solving our own problems in Christian Science? Just so, the clear knowing of absolute Truth, with faith in its power to neutralize error, outweighs the sum total of evil's boasted claims and accomplishments.

What Christian Scientist has not proved the power of Love to banish fear and hate? Never in world history has there been a greater need for demonstrating the Science of divine Love as taught and practiced by our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. Consider her words in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 104): "I will love, if another hates. I will gain a balance on the side of good, my true being. This alone gives me the forces of God wherewith to overcome all error." This courageous discipline of thought is imperative if we, too, would move mountains of wickedness, fear, and suffering.

Christ Jesus, the greatest of spiritual teachers, said, "Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you." Our meek and mighty Way-shower was confronted with the same foe that mankind is meeting today and has faced since jealousy and rage used Cain to slay his brother Abel. While the servants of the more enlightened governments are dealing wisely and as effectually as possible with present-day workers of iniquity and their cruel methods of warfare, enlightened followers of Christ may hold up their comrades' hands through powerful spiritual warfare. Let us conquer our enemies with love. We cannot love evil or evil's workings, but we can and must love the real man, the reflection of God, and acknowledge his presence even in the face of the boasted presence of hordes of mortals deceived by the sinful suggestions of evil. In this way alone shall we find that we have no enemies; for all mankind eventually must unite in universal brotherhood by the effacing of the one common foe, the baseless belief that God, good, is less than All-in-all.

How futile to hate, to hurl mental or verbal diatribes against evil aggressors! As animal magnetism, through fear, hate, ignorance, or lust, seems to hurl nation against nation, shall not we work to disarm aggression by destroying the evil beliefs which actuate it? The greatest offender is the greatest victim of false belief.

There is no such thing as righteous indignation. Circumstances do not make indignation right, and indignation against evil under any circumstances betrays a forgetfulness of God's allness. Let us not aid the purposes of evil by railing at individuals or nations. Personalizing evil exposes ignorance of the nature of the struggle. While we deplore evidences of sin, weakness, or moral blindness, we must not accept these errors as real, but watch that we ourselves are not used by the same errors. Our Leader points the lesson where she writes (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 156): "It is materialism through which the animal magnetizer preys, and in turn becomes a prey. Spirituality is the basis of all true thought and volition." Spiritualization of thought alone will protect an individual or nation from becoming an instrument or a victim of unrighteousness.

Are we accepting material warfare as something real, fearing its methods, talking it over breathlessly, bolstering its egotistical claims by giving them credence? Are we accepting, unchallenged, mortal mind's own estimate of its ability to overpower the truth? Do we believe it possible for treachery to outwit and paralyze right endeavor? Are we apathetically failing to recognize that the sharp thrusts of material conquest merely counterfeit the Word of God, which alone "is quick, and powerful"? By so doing we are aiding the enemy, and helping to delay the victory of right and the establishment of peace among the nations.

As Christian Scientists, let us be resolved to "gain a balance on the side of good." Let us ally ourselves consistently with the truth through spiritual knowing and Christlike loving. Let us fear not to accept the challenge of godlessness wherever found, but, like the youthful David, go forth to battle with the weapons we have tried and proved faithful. Mere human policy, however promising, is powerless of itself to protect against malicious purpose. We know from glorious victories that right alone is might; that allegiance to divine Principle assures success of honest endeavor. "I will love, if another hates." If this be our faithful determination, we shall realize the truth of our Leader's words (Unity of Good, p. 17), "Be allied to the deific power, and all that is good will aid your journey, as the stars in their courses fought against Sisera." Thus will Christian Scientists have their part in hastening the ending of human strife and the coming of universal love and brotherhood.
