I wish to express my gratitude for the many blessings that have come to me through the study and application of Christian Science. My life has been transformed from the way of evil to the way of good. Although I saw the results of this truth applied in my immediate family, my first occasion to call upon the healing power of Christian Science came while I was alone in a large eastern city, and was overcome with an alarming physical condition. The doctor whom I called informed me that I should have to remain in bed a long time and keep completely quiet, as the condition was very grave. After this verdict my thought turned to Christian Science. I knew no one who was interested in it, nor was I acquainted with the streets or districts of this city, so I turned to the telephone directory and looked for a Christian Science practitioner with a telephone prefix corresponding to mine. I found a practitioner, who lovingly responded to my call by coming to see me. After one treatment I was able to sleep peacefully through the night. Later, the practitioner asked me if I had a copy of Science and Health. When he found that I did not have one, he graciously left a copy, and said that if I so desired he would bring me one for my own when he returned the next day. This was my first copy of the textbook. As I read it, I discovered that Christian Science was what I had always thought religion should be, as I could never accept the concept of God as outlined by the orthodox churches. Up to this time I had been considered a very profane man; it seemed impossible for me to carry on a conversation without using a great deal of profanity. During my first reading of Science and Health I was healed of this habit, and I have remained healed, because this study has so cleared my thought and increased my vocabulary that I no longer deem it necessary to use profanity.

The next outstanding healing was of the tobacco habit. I had used cigarettes for over twenty years, smoking the strongest ones obtainable; in fact, they were so strong that the majority of my friends could not smoke them. This healing came through a desire to become a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church. At first I was indignant that I would not be accepted for membership because I somked, and I rebelled at this attitude of the church. But one day while I was reading Science and Health, the spiritual interpretation of our Leader's words found on page 26, "Jesus' teaching and practice of Truth involved such a sacrifice as makes us admit its Principle to be Love," came to me. When I realized what Jesus had sacrificed to give us the truth, I became humble and willing to sacrifice such a small thing as cigarettes, so that I might affiliate with this great Cause and help to carry on the work. The healing was instantaneous, the false desire was obliterated by the greater desire for good, and has never returned.

Once when I was held up and shot by bandits who were hiding in my garage, I was wonderfully protected. Divine intelligence told me how to protect my belongings and gave me the necessary strength to do this. During the encounter a bullet from a large caliber gun grazed my cheek, leaving a deep wound. After the encounter the bandits fled, and I walked into the house and called a practitioner. Work was immediately done, with the result that I never felt the least pain; the wound gave me no concern, nor did it leave a disfiguring scar. In two weeks I resumed my place as usher at the church of which I am a member.
