The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Scarsdale, New York (First Church).

Lecturer: Professor Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Mrs. Jennie O. Barguet, who said:—

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 313): "Jesus of Nazareth was the most scientific man that ever trod the globe. He plunged beneath the material surface of things, and found the spiritual cause." The lecturer is going to help us see "beneath the material surface of things," so that we may find the remedy for our troubles.

About twenty-one years ago I was healed, in one absent treatment by a Christian Science practitioner, of a severe form of grippe from which I had suffered for several weeks. This made such an impression upon me that I decided to find out what had healed me, and I began to study the Christian Science textbook, and found the God of love, "who healeth all thy diseases." During the intervening years I have had many proofs of the power and presence of divine Love.

Seattle, Washington (First Church).

Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Mrs. Helen M. Cruikshank, who said:—

In the twenty-second chapter of the book of Job we read, "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee." Students of Christian Science have become acquainted with God because they have found God to be divine Principle, Love, and can testify to the efficacy of healing through Christian Science. During a Christian Science lecture I was instantaneously healed of a dislocation in the right side. When the lecture was about half over, whatever had been out of place resumed its normal position. A Christian Science lecture provides an opportunity for all to become better acquainted with God, and reveals and engenders confidence in God's power to supply all good. It also removes misconceptions of the mission of Christian Science.

Dublin, Ireland (Second Church).

Lecturer: Dr. Hendrik J. de Lange; introduced by Mrs. Jeanne Frazer Stevenson, who said:—

Nearly two thousand years ago the angels sang, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." To a world torn with anxiety and trouble, today the angels still ring out their message. Mrs. Eddy, the Founder and Discoverer of Christian Science, says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. vii), "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings;" and, "The time for thinkers has come. Truth, independent of doctrines and time-honored systems, knocks at the portals of humanity." We meet to share with you this new-old gospel with its healing message. I have been healed of ulcerated throat and sciatica by reading the Christian Science textbook.

London, England (Seventh Church).

Lecturer: Ralph B. Scholfield; introduced by Albert Joseph Bateman, who said:—

We are gathered together to hear a lecture on Christian Science. Our lecturer will tell us something of what Christian Science teaches regarding the omnipotence of God, which Christ Jesus demonstrated in all his words and works; and how Mary Baker Eddy used her understanding of the omnipotence and absoluteness of God as the corner stone upon which she founded the Christian Science movement. He will also show us, in so far as is possible in the short space of one hour, how the knowledge of Christian Science, based upon divine Principle, can be applied to the healing of sin, disease, unhappiness, and in fact all the troubles which afflict us in our daily lives.

I have been a student of Christian Science for the past twenty-two years. I was first led to take up its study by witnessing on the one hand the regeneration of a very evil person, and on the other hand the restoration to perfect health of one who had for years been a confirmed invalid, both through the help of Christian Science. During all these years my family and I have experienced many physical healings and I have found Christian Science to be of inestimable benefit both in my home and in my business.

Atascadero, California (First Church).

Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Mrs. Hattie F. Crouse, who said:—

Jesus said, "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house." And in the first chapter of Genesis we read these inspiring words: "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good." This light—the clear perception of the allness of God, good—came to the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, as a wonderful revelation; and in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 558), she has written: "When you look it [Science] fairly in the face, you can heal by its means, and it has for you a light above the sun, for God 'is the light thereof.'"

Christian Science completely and permanently healed a physical condition known as eczema, which had interfered with my comfort, happiness, and usefulness during all the previous years of my life; and for which I had used almost every known remedy. This healing was the result of three treatments given by a Christian Science practitioner, one whose consciousness was illumined with the light of good, and who knew how to direct its healing rays into my darkened thought. It was Mrs. Eddy's great desire that this light should come to all men everywhere, and to this end she instituted a Board of Lectureship whose members are qualified by study and experience to give out the light to others.

Cleveland, Ohio (Third Church).

Lecturer: Salem Andrew Hart; introduced by Harvey E. Volmar, who said:—

In the words of a familiar hymn,

"Come to the feast of love, come, ever knowing
Earth has no sorrow but Love can remove."

We learn in Christian Science that to be grateful is to recognize God as All-in-all and that nothing else is present or has power. This presence and power was made manifest to me recently when my automobile skidded, jumped the curb, passed between two large trees on a neighbor's lawn, and came to a stop within a few feet of a beautiful blue spruce tree, with no damage except the marks of the tires in the lawn. The fact that no damage resulted was divinely natural, as it was in accordance with God's law—in that "in him we live, and move, and have our being."

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in her textbook, "Science and Health with Keyto the Scriptures," says on page 275, "The starting-point of divine Science is that God, Spirit, is All-in-all, and that there is no other might nor Mind,—that God is Love, and therefore He is divine Principle." Our lecturer brings a message that I am sure will help us gain a better understanding of the omnipresence and omnipotence of God, infinite good.

Buenos Aires, Argentina, South America (Second Church).

Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by F. Leslie Crawford, who said:—

On page x of the Preface to our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the author, Mary Baker Eddy, has written these words: "The divine Principle of healing is proved in the personal experience of any sincere seeker of Truth." I am so grateful to be able to testify to the truth of those words of our dear Leader, by many beautiful healings I have personally experienced through Christian Science. Among these were the healing of rupture of five years' duration and the healing of an injured spine. For the last twenty-two years Christian Science has been my only physician, and it has never failed me.

Tulsa, Oklahoma (First Church).

Lecturer: William Wallace Porter; introduced by Ralph W. Everett, who said:—

Jesus proved his words by his works. He also declared that if we believed on him, that is, if we understood the spiritual meaning of his teachings, we, too, should do the works that he did. Christian Science points men to the Scriptures for inspiration and guidance. It answers the age-old question, "What is truth?" by healing the sick and reforming the sinner. It illumines the Scriptures and teaches men how they may solve scientifically the problems confronting them.

Those who have turned unreservedly to it for help testify that there comes to them an understanding of God such as was not deemed possible before. Thus they learn the meaning of God's omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience, and that God is all to them, able to meet every human need. Therefore with ever increasing measure they let these truths govern them.

When my attention was first directed to Christian Science, it was this promise of freedom spoken of in the Scriptures and explained in Christian Science that prompted me to investigate and, later, turn to it for healing. I was then suffering, and had been for more than two years, with what had been pronounced Bright's disease. The material remedies employed for help afforded no relief, and the opportunity for recovery seemed hopeless. After I turned to Christian Science for help the hopeless state of thought was quickly replaced with hope and assurance, and my healing was rapid, complete, and permanent. This is typical of what Christian Science is doing for those who turn to it for help.

York, Pennsylvania (Second Church).

Lecturer: Judge Frederick C. Hill; introduced by Miss Mabel Ogden, who said:—

We are assembled here tonight to learn more about Christian Science, and to gain a better understanding of God. In the Bible, the first chapter of Genesis, we read, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." When we come to Christian Science, we study the Bible in connection with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. By studying these together our true relationship to God is unfolded to us. God is the divine Principle of all that really is, all-loving, all-knowing, all-wise, all-seeing Spirit, Life, Truth, and Love. Man is God's idea, made in His image and likeness. God is perfect; therefore man as God's idea cannot be anything but perfect. Thus we learn the true relationship between man and God.

I have had many healings through Christian Science, for which I am very grateful. A few years ago I was stricken with neuritis in its worst form. My joints were stiffened and I suffered with great pain. With the help of a practitioner and my own understanding I was able to attend to my duties each day. At this time I was called upon to teach in the Sunday school. I accepted the call and was afterward healed completely. This proved to me that obedience to the law of God is an effectual help.

St. Paul, Minnesota (Second Church).

Lecturer: A. Hervey Bathurst; introduced by J. H. Terrell, who said:

It is my privilege to bear witness to the healing truth of Christian Science. In my own home, and in the homes of others, I have witnessed the healing of many serious diseases; and I myself have been healed of ptomaine poisoning, relieved of a violet temper, helped mentally; and in the face of so-called changing conditions, when the business with which I had been associated for many years was swept away, I was enabled to demonstrate in an entirely new line of endeavor, some measure of success, through depending solely on Christian Science for help and guidance.
