God led us to Christian Science at a time of sore need

God led us to Christian Science at a time of sore need. That was about nine years ago. Our two-year-old boy had lain for six months in a hospital, suffering from a suppurating wound in the side, about ten centimeters long, and from two suppurating openings in the knee. These were the result of an operation to remove pus which had gathered on the ribs and knee. The physicians had given it the terrifying name of caries. The little fellow, who had previously been unusually healthy, looked like a skeleton when we fetched him from the hospital. We were told that it would be just as well if the wound remained open, and that very likely the knee would always be stiff. Our home was a cheerless spot. I had to change the bandage every day. Often in the night I stood at the open window and prayed: "Speak the word only, and my child will be healed! Oh, if I could only touch the hem of Thy garment!" At this time a second child was born to us. Those were indeed dark days. But Mrs. Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 2), "The desire which goes forth hungering after righteousness is blessed of our Father, and it does not return unto us void."

My husband heard of Christian Science, attended a few church services, and through this attendance was soon able to overcome a stubborn enemy, the taste for alcohol. This great healing brought light and contentment into our home. My husband was an enthusiastic attendant, and happy when he became a member of a branch church and then of The Mother Church and could help in the movement. My road to this goal was wearisome; step by step I had to fight my way on. Home duties as well as the care of two small children kept me from attending services regularly.

My husband asked a Christian Science practitioner for help for our child; and his health improved slowly, so that we could send him to Sunday school. One morning, however, he lay in bed quite apathetic, a deep yellow color covering his whole body. Terror blotted out everything I had learned in Christian Science, and I ran for the doctor. He came, pronounced it jaundice, and expressed the opinion that the boy would not be able to get up again for four weeks, as he was much too feeble.
