I have been wonderfully blessed through the study and...
I have been wonderfully blessed through the study and application of the teachings of Christian Science. It was not physical suffering that led me to this Science, but the longing for something that would give me peace of mind. In 1920, while I was visiting in Seattle, a friend invited me to attend a Christian Science lecture. It was at noonday, and what impressed me most was the happiness, peace, and joy expressed by all who attended. This set me to wondering what power was back of it. Then a month later I had the privilege of making the trip to Los Angeles by boat with this same friend. During this trip she had a wonderful demonstration: she awakened to find that her hip joint had slipped out of the socket, and asked to be left alone; I reluctantly went to breakfast, and on my return to the stateroom found her up and dressed, and she walked off the boat and several blocks to the street car, all this without material aid. To me it was marvelous. Nothing was explained to me, and I being a trained nurse was very curious to know what had brought the healing.
Even after this I criticized Christian Science and did not think it was for anyone except sick people. A little later "man's extremity" proved to be "God's opportunity." I came to the end of my financial resources, and began attending Christian Science church services; but much had to be healed, as I was very critical. After reading the Lesson-Sermons daily I was greatly blessed, and the truth began to dawn on my consciousness and reveal to me a real understanding of God and man; and while I still have much to overcome, I have gained a freedom that surpasses all earthly joys. I have been healed of self-pity, resentment, malice, greed for money, and many other forms of discord.
I should like to tell of one beautiful healing I received while attending a lecture. I was rather deaf and had great fear of becoming totally so. The auditorium where the lecture was to be delivered was filled, so I had to go to the balcony. I did not hear one word the first fifteen minutes; but I held to the thought that I had come to hear the truth that makes free and there was no stoppage in divine Mind. I worked as we are taught in Christian Science to the best of my understanding, and my prayer was that I might be free so I could hear God's word; and then I heard perfectly. That was four years ago; now I can hear even the crickets and the birds, which I had not heard for a long time. I was also healed of pneumonia in one treatment by a loving practitioner.
