On page 162 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy states, "Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies." I have found the proof of this statement in the healing of asthma, influenza, smoking, and many other false beliefs. My parents tried every available means known to them to relieve me of asthma, but it was of no use: doctors and medical remedies did not cure. Therefore, when my mother heard of Christian Science and asked me to try it, I was ready. I was a rather skeptical youth when Science and Health was first placed in my hands, but I had always had a strong desire to know and to dot the right thing. I saw at once that Christian Science was the truth, and have never since doubted it. Just when the asthma left me I know not; but it was shortly after I began to read Christian Science literature. Anybody who has ever been a victim of asthma can realize what a tremendous relief this healing was to me, an active young man with a liking for sport. It enabled me to take a successful part in athletics, bringing strength and endurance where weakness and lack of breath had been manifested.

The healing of influenza came during the war. The symptoms were so evident that some of the members of my company chided me, advising that I report to the doctors at once. Instead of taking this advice I telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner—the welfare worker. He immediately quieted my fears, told me to go to bed as usual and not to be afraid, and he would work for me. The next morning I awoke perfectly healed; there was not a trace of fever or sore throat, not even a sign of weakness.

The healing of smoking came through the increasing vision of the wrongness of smoking, and the knowledge of the inconsistency of indulging in the use of tobacco while endeavoring to practice Christian Science. The seeming pleasure, analyzed, became the opposite, until the point of firm decision against smoking was attained. I have never desired to smoke since, and I had smoked for years—approximately a package of twenty cigarettes a day—inhaling almost every puff. This healing proved to be a great benefit to me physically, as a musician; but the release from the sense of bondage was even more beneficial.
