Whenever I am tempted to be discouraged or cast...
Whenever I am tempted to be discouraged or cast down, my thought always turns quickly to my first healing in Christian Science; for I was, indeed, very much like the woman spoken of in the New Testament who "had suffered many things of many physicians, ... and was nothing bettered, but rather grew wrose." A well-known nerve specialist had told my husband that I was beyond all help. Before going to him I had tried various treatments—chiropractic, rigid dieting, water cure, and patent medicines, all to no avail—and was steadily growing worse. The specialist requested my husband to take my Bible away from me, and to allow no one to see me who would turn the conversation to religion, saying, "She thinks too much about God, and needs to have her thought turned to lighter subjects."
Although I was an active member of a so-called orthodox church, the church failed utterly to fill my hunger for a knowledge of God. At this time I was longing for death, as it seemed as if only in that way would I find God. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy had been lent to my mother and had been in our home for many years, but we had never opened it as I was decidedly prejudiced against what I thought Christian Science to be. However, a Christian Science pamphlet, entitled "What went ye out for to see?" fell into my hands by what seemed then a mere chance, and I was deeply impressed with it. Shortly after this my husband prepared to send me to a hospital; and the evening of that decision was indeed a sad one, as I was convinced that I should never return to my home and family. My husband asked me to sit down and let him read to me from Science and Health, which I very unwillingly did, saying that if the doctors could not heal me, certainly a book could not. But he began to read, and after he had been reading about an hour, it seemed as if a veil was lifted from my eyes, and I exclaimed: "Why, God is Love, and He loves me, and He never made me sick, and I am healed. I do not have to go away!" And I did not! In a short time I resumed my household duties and threw away two basketfuls of medicines and lotions. Since that time we have relied entirely upon Christian Science.
It would occupy too much space to enumerate the many proofs we have had of divine Love's care and protection, but there are three which I should like to mention. I was completely healed of a malignant contagious disease in less than forty-eight hours after help was asked from a loving practitioner. My husband was healed of gallstones through our reliance on the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation (Science and Health, pp. 16, 17); although we were very new in Christian Science, we were confident that God could heal His children. My daughter was healed of blood poisoning in her finger. This took place through the knowledge of the truth she had gained from attendance at the Christian Science Sunday School. So it is small wonder that my heart is filled with deep gratitude to that gentle woman, Mrs. Eddy, who lived in such close communion with God that she was able to "reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Manual, p. 17). I am grateful for all the channels for good which she has provided for us; for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for the wonderful privilege of class instruction from a loyal teacher of Christian Science.—
