What Can I Give?

In gratitude that perfect Love is here,
Bestowing every blessing full and free,
I ask, What can I give, O Love most dear?
And swiftly comes the answer back to me:

More tenderness to cancel human strife,
More understanding love in thought and deed,
More trust to prove that good alone is Life,
More healing truth to fill another's need;

More gladness, at all times, in every place,
More steadfast, calm reliance on the right,
More patience, too, with which to run the race,
And gratitude that ever points to light.

And if I give these gifts, then take my way
Into the heart of prayer, and close the door,
I know that I shall hear my Father say,
Thou hast been faithful. Could I ask for more?

And I shall answer, Love divine, I know
The power of giving is not found in me;
Thou art the only source, and I but show
Thy qualities reflected back to Thee.
