Signs of the Times

[Dr. J. W. Pearson, as quoted in the Herald-Dispatch, Huntington, West Virginia]

It has been said that whoever invents a device that will be able to hold a ship in an upright position in the time of storm will be a benefactor of the race. But what is of even greater importance is some power, known and resorted to, which is able to hold life steady in time of distress, fears, and uncertainty. To-day not a nation on this earth, not a church in the world, ... but feels the need of some steadying power! It is not far away. The Unseen is greater than the seen. We are accustomed to so much power in the seen that we are liable to overlook the resources of the Invisible. The world's calm and poise is with God. How shall we appropriate the powers of the Unseen?

A great faith can do it. Moses must have had a great faith to enter the conflict with the kings of Egypt. Moses must have had a great faith to challenge the age-old curse of human slavery. Moses must have had a great faith to lead a great mass of people who did not have sense enough to follow the wise ways of God. But he had this; and this always puts a man in contact with the Invisible.
