I feel I must express my deep-felt gratitude for the healing...

I feel I must express my deep-felt gratitude for the healing power of divine Love.

In 1918, while in the trenches, in a machine gun crossfire I was wounded in the right hand and the upper thigh. Because of difficulty in locating the bullet, and lack of time, it was not extracted in the field hospital. After the conclusion of the campaign, when I was back in business, the pain grew so great that I sought the help of Christian Science; immediate cessation of the pain followed. It was also made clear to me at that time that in reality no foreign substance could ever invade an idea of God.

In spite of this healing, I still felt well satisfied with my material ways, and was unable to grasp the full significance of the practitioner's statements. There was still a fear of many difficulties and inconveniences to be gone through. For example, the official military X-ray photographs showed that the bullet was lodged not with the pointed but with the broad side down, a turning of which, according to human belief, was well-nigh impossible. It might take place, but only with very great pain. All this attention to materiality ripened into fresh pain and trouble. The pain grew constantly more severe until I could hardly carry out my professional duties; indeed, travel by motor cycle and many other things were sometimes impossibilities to me.
