Since taking up the study of Christian Science, about...
Since taking up the study of Christian Science, about nineteen years ago, I have had many healings and much help from friends and practitioners. I am learning to overcome faults of disposition by knowing that, as Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 371), "Truth is an alternative in the entire system, and can make it 'every whit whole.'"
One healing, which occurred during my Association meeting two years ago last June, seemed very wonderful to me. Our family had gone to a summer resort very early that year, and one evening my young daughter and I were walking on some huge logs by the edge of the lake. They were very slippery, and before I could recover my balance I had fallen across two logs and struck my back severely. In fact, I was so numbed at first that I lay still and told my daughter to repeat "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). After a while I was able to get to the house with her help. We read faithfully, but every morning it was agony for me to get out of bed. I tried hard not to let my husband know of the pain, but often the tears would stream down my face. I knew that after I was once up and could read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, I should receive help. I was not able to move about much, but the pain always left after I had read the Lesson.
We were very far from a telephone and as my Association was to meet in two weeks, I thought I could manage till then without help. My husband kept saying, "When you go to your Association, you must have a medical examination." I would always reply, "Yes, I will get help," meaning I would ask my teacher for help. For the ensuing two weeks, each morning I had the same struggle to arise; but the day I was to start for my Association meeting, I arose, dressed, and never once thought about my back. I took the long stage trip, rejoicing that I was soon to receive the much needed spiritual food. During the afternoon address, when I had forgotten all about my back in learning more about God and His spiritual idea, I distinctly felt the bones of my spinal column twist and ease as if into place. The healing was permanent, and all the rest of the summer I arose with gratitude in my heart for Christian Science.
