The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Compton, California (First Church).
Lecturer: Robert Stanley Ross; introduced by Harry R. Copeland, who said:—
In the Bible are recorded many healings which were brought about by purely spiritual means. Now all of these spiritual healings were Christian Science demonstration although the term "Christian Science" was not used at that time. For about three hundred years after the advent of our great Way-shower, Jesus, spiritual healing was carried on by his followers; but from that time it was practically lost to humanity until well past the middle of the nineteenth century. In the year 1866 Mary Baker Eddy as a result of her purity and consecrated study of the Scriptures penetrated the mists of materiality and discovered the scientific means by which Jesus, the prophets, and the apostles performed their so-called miracles. She named her discovery "Christian Science" and she defines it on the first page of her book "Rudimental Divine Science" as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."
She found that the law of God, good, is as eternal as God Himself, and that humanity to-day needs only to know the law and obey it to experience harmony. We have had proofs of this many times in my own family. Thirty-two years ago my mother turned to Christian Science for the healing of lung trouble after she had been given up as incurable by four different physicians. Through the study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and the help of a Christian Science practitioner she was restored to health in a short time. During all these years Christian Science has been our never failing Comforter.
Rochdale, England (joint lecture).
Lecturer: Peter V. Ross; introduced by Mrs. Wynn, who said:—
It is just over twenty-one years since I first heard a lecture on Christian Science in this hall. The lecturer that evening made frequent use of the text we all know so well, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." After hearing that lecture I was so fully convinced of the truth, and my thought was so uplifted, that I was enabled to give up the use of material remedies at once and was healed of constipation and backaches almost immediately. Since that time Christian Science has been my only physician.
Salt Lake City, Utah (First Church).
Lecturer: Gavin W. Allan; introduced by Clyde H. Renshaw, who said:—
In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." In The Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and at the Wednesday evening meetings which are held throughout the world, testimonies of healing are related which cover all forms of physical disease, discord of every name and nature, and the healing of sinful habits—such as the drug habit, the liquor habit, and the tobacco habit. Through the ministrations of Christian Science I have been quickly healed of blood poisoning, attacks of indigestion, influenza, and ptomaine poisoning; also the smoking habit.
East London, South Africa (Society).
Lecturer: William Wallace Porter; introduced by Charles Lysle Castle, who said:—
There are thousands of people who are proving the teachings of Christian Science to be true, and that it does bring health and happiness into the lives and homes of its students.
I myself did not come into Christian Science for physical healing but because of a desire to know God aright. It is now a little over ten years since Christian Science first came into my home, and since then we have experienced many healings and blessings, through the application of its teachings. Some of the members of my family have had instantaneous healings. It was very shortly after we took up the study of Christian Science that one of our boys, who was then about three years of age, commenced ailing until one day he appeared to be in great pain and was rapidly getting worse; and being very young students in Christian Science at the time, we got rather alarmed at the condition of the child and sent for the doctor, and when he came he said the child was suffering from an acute attack of appendicitis and it was necessary to operate immediately as it might prove fatal. My wife and I could not bear the thought of an operation, so we decided to send a telegram to a Christian Science practitioner, who was about two hundred miles away, for absent treatment. This was about four o'clock in the afternoon, and about two hours later all pain had left and he went to sleep and slept right through the night; and the next morning he jumped up and asked to be dressed and ran out to play with the other children. Later in the day the doctor came to see how the child was getting on, and was very much surprised to see him playing with the other children. He examined him and said, "Well, there is nothing there now, and it was certainly there yesterday afternoon, and if this is what Christian Science has done for your child then it is really wonderful."
I find it difficult to express in words the heartfelt gratitude I feel for what Christian Science has done for my family and for myself, more especially for the spiritual uplifting I have had through the study of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
Jersey City, New Jersey (First Church).
Lecturer: Mrs. Nelvia E. Ritchie; introduced by Mrs. Pearl Gearhart, who said:—
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans: "It is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God." This giving account of one's self is a glorious occupation, and is learned in Christian Science through earnest study of the Bible in conjunction with the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
Many years ago through this study I was healed of an abnormal growth which had caused me great suffering. Since then I have had many and varied proofs of God's omnipotent care.
Chicago, Illinois (Second Church).
Lecturer: William Duncan Kilpatrick; introduced by Harry Alden Dodge, who said:—
Our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has written in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 497), "As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life." When Christian Science was presented to me about twenty years ago I was sick, despondent, discouraged, and without a God. But after receiving a few treatments from a Christian Science practitioner and studying the Bible together with Mrs. Eddy's writings, confidence was restored and the healing followed. I am thoroughly convinced that Christian Science is the truth and that its blessings are for all mankind.
Honolulu, Hawah (First Church).
Lecturer: Judge Samuel W. Greene; introduced by Lieut.-Col. John C. Moore, who said:—
Jesus once said to his disciples, "This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you." When we study the manner in which Jesus loved his disciples, we find that it was by teaching them positive right activity through his personal example and by precept, so that they as well as he might reflect their creator in all of His power and harmony. This activity manifested itself in Jesus' life and in theirs in the ability to bring peace and happiness to the sorrowing and restore health to the sick. There is nothing on record to indicate that Jesus expected this activity to cease when he and his immediate disciples passed on. His followers obeyed his commandment to heal the sick and comfort the sorrowing for several hundred years after his ascension. However, this manner of showing love for one another had been lost for centuries when it was rediscovered by Mary Baker Eddy and again lived by her and published to the world in her writings as Christian Science. I can personally attest the healing effect of this Science.
