My family felt the touch of the healing Christ in 1915...

My family felt the touch of the healing Christ in 1915 through the healing of my mother after material means had failed; and although I had been healed during the influenza epidemic, I did not then become interested in Christian Science. During my first two years of college I drifted, but I recall now that every time I was in trouble I would try to know the truth, and sometimes even sought help from a practitioner.

Finally, I met a friend who listened to my talk of Christian Science with interest. Soon we began attending church together, and in 1924 we joined a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. The following spring, just after our graduation from college, we were blessed with class instruction from the same teacher. We were also admitted to membership in The Mother Church. The reason why this young woman, who is now my wife, and I were able to make some measure of progress in Christian Science, and work out our problems together, was that we learned to rejoice in tribulation and seek God's answer to all our problems. This has truly blessed us, teaching us that God hallows every human relationship and answers all our prayers.

I have had many physical healings. One in particular was a great lesson, teaching me that every discord is a mental problem. While at the university I suffered an infection of the finger which grew malignant. I was in pain day and night. Our work in Science seemed to fail; so in fear and desperation I went to the university infirmary, where they told me I had not come too soon. They lanced the finger, and I was a daily visitor there for over a month. Although they were very kind, the whole experience was very painful. Not long afterward, the same infected condition appeared on the calf of my leg, and I suffered as much as before. But this time I knew the error had to be destroyed through Christian Science. One afternoon I went to a practitioner's office, and he said, "It is right for that to open, and Truth will do it." I went home in ease, tore off the bandage, and the great regenerative power of right thinking had done the work! There was no pain after that. This taught me that God is the real healer, for the condition never returned.

I can never cease expressing my gratitude for Christian Science, for it has given me the Christianity of Jesus and revealed the beauty and purpose of the Bible. Truly, it came at a time when my belief in religion was sorely tested, but it guided me through the claims of intellectualism safely and surely. I am also grateful for "The Life of Mary Baker Eddy" by Sibyl Wilbur; for this volume is an honest presentation of the life of a God-crowned woman.

Serving as an usher and as a worker in the Sunday school has wrought a great blessing into my life, having shown me the growing acceptance of Christian Science. If I were ever called upon to give advice to a new student of Christian Science I should say, Pray daily that God will open the way for you to be useful and to serve, for joyous progress comes from helping others. Also, I am grateful for our Wednesday evening meetings: a simple testimony may bring instantaneous healing, not only to one, but to many strangers within our gates.

I am grateful for associate membership in the Christian Science Society of the University of California; for membership in a branch church and The Mother Church; and I can sum up my gratitude by saying that daily I am finding, in some measure, the kingdom of heaven as promised by Christ Jesus and revealed by the teachings of Christian Science. Truly, there is a permanent joy and a healing grace in true Christianity that none can deny who have seen its power; and Christian Science has brought this to me in the degree that I have been willing to understand it and demonstrate it.—Harry Edward De Lasaux, Jr., Berkeley, California.
