For over eleven years I have enjoyed the most wonderful gift I ever received, namely, a slight understanding of Christian Science as taught in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. As we never had a religion in our home, life seemed incomplete to me, and my desire from early childhood to know God made me wander from place to place in search of a knowledge of Him, and some reasonable explanation of man's existence. After visiting many churches and finding nothing logical, I decided to stay away from all of them and pray, in the best way I knew how, for guidance in my quest for the better things in life which I earnestly desired. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 1), "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." And so in a very unexpected way, and much to my objection,—thus proving that "spiritual Love will force you to accept what best promotes your growth" (ibid., p. 266),—I was placed in an office which later proved to be an answer to my prayers. During the war many loved ones were overseas seemingly in great danger, and once more my search began. In the course of conversation with a fellow worker who was a student of Christian Science, an invitation was extended me to attend a lecture to be given within a few days, and I gratefully accepted. It proved to be just what I had been searching for. It seemed as if the lecturer was speaking directly to me; and it was at this lecture that I received the revelation that God is Love and that He is everywhere present, even in France, where my thoughts often were at that time.

My progress in Christian Science seemed very rapid, for I had learned that "with God all things are possible," and my faith in Him was unbounded. I had been healed of many discordant conditions, such as headaches, colds, grippe, chilblains, influenza, and a touch of pneumonia, as well as of the need of glasses; but the time came when I had to prove and overcome through spiritual understanding, and not through faith alone or dependence on a practitioner. It seemed that no sooner had one discordant condition been destroyed than another presented itself; and for two years self-condemnation and discouragement made aggressive attacks and whispered that no progress was being made and that I was at a standstill. I was again given the opportunity to meet a friend who, with her loving though emphatic words, proved to me the statement found in Science and Health (p. 518), "The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother's need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another's good." Little by little the wall of fear was destroyed, faith having melted into spiritual understanding; and a greater desire to study the textbook presented itself.

I am grateful for a fuller realization that "God is no respecter of persons," and that the blessings I have received can be had by all if the effort is made to receive them through the understanding of Christian Science. I love Mrs. Eddy and the beautiful truth she has revealed to us. It is a joy to know that any problem can be solved if we will turn to God for help.
