In your recent editorial, under the headline "Thoughts and Things," there are some misstatements concerning Christian Science which I should like the privilege of correcting. Christian Science does not teach that evil will vanish merely by shutting one's eyes to it; for much more than that is required in order to prove its unreality. I observe that you refer to evil as being "as real as darkness." From the Christian Science standpoint, evil is no more to be ignored than is darkness. But the natural scientist explains darkness as merely the absence of light. So, in Christian Science, evil is understood to be not a thing or a power, but the suppositional absence of good. Therefore, a realization of the omnipresence of God, good, which can be gained through growth in spirituality, will dispose of the belief in evil as effectually and completely as light dispels darkness. Metaphysical healing of physical disease may be accomplished through the righteous prayers of others, but the law of God demands spiritual progress and a willingness to abandon material beliefs and sensual appetites, and one soon learns in Christian Science that habitual prayer is requisite and that permanent health and peace are unattainable without spiritual growth on one's own part, involving mental and moral regeneration.
