The Christ-spirit in Healing

The healing of disease is a very important part of Christianity as interpreted by Christian Science. The Founder of Christianity, Christ Jesus, healed "all manner of disease among the people," as well as sin, and commanded his disciples to follow his example; and whether Christians to-day are doing as he commanded or not, the fact is that the onus to do so remains upon them. Mrs. Eddy, long before her discovery of Christian Science, felt the necessity of obeying the Master and doing as he had done; but not until her own wonderful healing from a condition which had been pronounced incurable by a physician, did she discover the Science which underlies all Christian or spiritual healing.

After Mrs. Eddy discovered Christian Science and had proved conclusively that disease can be healed by spiritual means, she wrote the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," expounding the Science, elucidating its Principle, and stating its laws or rules. And anyone who takes the trouble to study Science and Health in an unprejudiced manner must arrive at the conclusion that two factors enter into the successful practice of spiritual healing—namely, an understanding of divine Science and the Christ-spirit. Further, it will be noticed that human will-power, so called, enters not at all into the process.

In Science and Health (p. 206) our Leader bears out what has just been said in the clearest possible language. She writes: "Will-power is capable of all evil. It can never heal the sick, for it is the prayer of the unrighteous; while the exercise of the sentiments—hope, faith, love—is the prayer of the righteous. This prayer, governed by Science instead of the senses, heals the sick." The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science thus rules out will-power entirely, not only because it is incapable of healing the sick, but also because it is "capable of all evil." And she states exactly the quality of the thought necessary to bring about healing: it must be thought governed by divine Science; it must be righteous or upright; and in it there should obtain the three invaluable spiritual qualities of hope, faith, and love.
