Burning Bush

I have read in the recent issues of your paper your articles under the heading, "Gems from the Author of Christian Science," most of which merely express the opinion of your writer regarding detached quotations from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. In one issue, under the above heading, the following statement is made regarding the practice of Christian Science: "It consists of hurling back (by absent mental treatment, of course) 'upon the enemy' the cancer, tumors, arsenical or mercurial or morphine poisoning, consumption, boils, headaches, and all such unreal things with which one is supposed to be afflicted by these 'mental assassins.' I suppose this retaliatory method, which Mrs. Eddy and her students practiced with a vengeance, is her understanding of the Golden Rule: or perhaps of 'heaping coals of fire.' " Assuming that as a Christian sect you wish to be fair, I cannot believe that you would knowingly grossly misrepresent the religion of others. It would, however, be difficult to conceive of a greater misrepresentation regarding the practice of Christian Science than the passage which I have just quoted from your paper. I am sure nowhere in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy could you find anything which would warrant your making such a statement. Mrs. Eddy's counsel to her students as found in her writings is always to return good for evil. On pages 315 and 316 of her book "Miscellaneous Writings" are the following words of instruction to teachers of Christian Science: "They shall teach their students how to defend themselves against mental malpractice, but never to return evil for evil; never to attack the malpractitioner, but to know the truth that makes free,—and so to be a law not unto others, but themselves." I hope that you will realize the great injustice which you have done to the religion of Christian Science and to its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, and will publish this letter in the next issue of your paper.
