God's Highway

In this day of automobile and motor bus transportation, few persons can have failed to recognize the joy and comfort of a smooth, straight highway when traveling in such vehicles. Although we realize the superiority of these highways over rough and crooked roads, do we ever stop to think how they were planned and built?

The highway construction engineer is given his orders to construct a road from one place to another by the most direct route, regardless of the conditions of the land between the two points. Digging, blasting, and tunneling do away with the steep inclines; while filling, piling, and bridging enable the road to pass over valleys and rivers. Crooked places are made straight; rough places are made plain; and the road grows longer and longer, smoother and better day by day, until it is finished.

Throughout the Bible mention is made about building a highway for our God. Isaiah speaks of making a straight highway in the desert that "the glory of the Lord shall be revealed." Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 61), "Every valley of sin must be exalted, and every mountain of selfishness be brought low, that the highway of our God may be prepared in Science."
