In a recent issue of your paper, "The Daily Clinic"...

Virginian-Pilot

In a recent issue of your paper, "The Daily Clinic" column contained a reference to Christian Science which requires correction. In discussing various remedies for a calls form of disease, Dr. Evans stated, "What Hutchinson calls the fancy religions—Christian Science, new-thought, theosophy, and spiritualism—cures many." It is evident that the writer did not intend this as an unkindly reference to Christian Science; but in order that no one may be misled by his statement, permit me to state that Christian Science is in no way similar to the cults with which he grouped it.

Christian Science is first of all a religion, recognizing God as the Mind or intelligence which governs and heals. It therefore has nothing in common with new-thought, whose adherents, not necessarily religious, rely upon the so-called human mind to heal itself. Christian Science is founded on the Scriptures, and is in no way akin to Brahmanism or any other form of Oriental philosophy. It is also unlike spiritualism; and in order that there might be no misapprehension of its position, Mrs. Eddy devoted an entire chapter in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," to the subject of "Christian Science versus Spiritualism," explaining in detail the vast difference between the two. My purpose in writing this letter is to correct any misconception of Christian Science which may have taken place, and in no way is it intended as an unkindly criticism of the cults referred to. On pages 47 and 48 of the Church Manual, written by Mrs. Eddy for the guidance of Christian Scientists, we read under the caption "Charity to All": "While members of this Church do not believe in the doctrines of theosophy, hypnotism, or spiritualism, they cherish no enmity toward those who do believe in such doctrines, and will not harm them. But whenever God calls a member to bear testimony to Truth and to defend the Cause of Christ, he shall do it with love and without fear."
